Live from CeBIT 2007 : T-Mobile still a big cash cow for HTC
March 16, 2007 [General] | By Edward J. R.

When Peter Chou, the CEO of HTC, was expressing thanks to mobile operators that contributed the most to success of HTC (during press conference of HTC at 3GSM 2007) he mentionend only 2 operators: T-Mobile and Orange. While Orange is just a mid-size European operator, T-Mobile is one of the biggest operators in the world, and is also active in USA. Clearly HTC must have earned much more money off T-Mobile than Orange!

What is T-Mobile presenting at CeBIT in area of Windows Mobile phones?

The answer is simple: 2 phones, one for mass market - T-Mobile MDA Mail and one for business customers - T-Mobile Ameo.

T-Mobile MDA Mail is a European version of T-Mobile Dash that was very popular in USA:

Please note that while T-Mobile MDA Mail has no 3G, it supports EDGE! Actually T-Mobile in various European countries is the only operator that offers also EDGE, so support for EDGE comes in handy.

Another phone that was presented at CeBIT 2007 was T-Mobile Ameo (that we reviewed here):

Interestingly T-Mobile Ameo is on sale not only in UK but also in Germany. At T-Mobile shop that can be found in main railway station of Hannover (city where CeBIT takes place) actually one can purchase T-Mobile Ameo phone!

Maybe it is time for big operators like T-Mobile, to start sourcing Windows Mobile phones (for operator branding purposes) also from other manufacturers like i-mate, Giga-Byte and E-Ten - that all offer HSDPA in combination with VGA display but in much smaller implementation than T-Mobile Ameo? In any case T-Mobile probably is the single biggest distributor of HTC phones and this year it has also picked HTC phones and the future is therefore bright for HTC.

Without T-Mobile's support for HTC products there would be no HTC as we know it. It may also mean that HTC offers their products at good prices through T-Mobile so even if your SIM card is not from T-Mobile you can consider purchasing Windows Mobile phones through them! After all SIM unlock is either free or cheap...
