Live from CeBIT 2007 : Samsung presents ULTRA - part 1 of 2 - mobile phones
March 16, 2007 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R.

Ultra = super in Samsung-speak! Regular mobile phones, smartphones, PDA phones and UMPCs. Samsung's "Ultra" denotes top notch technology and small size:

What was first: Samsung's "Ultra" mobile phones or "UMPC" (with "Ultra" in abbreviation)? Read on!

Samsung is a huge corporation and while it presented also some Symbian phones, it was Windows Mobile powered Samsung i600 that was dominating stand of Samsung (if it was at all possible because Samsung had 2 huge stands - one in hall 26 aka "mobile phone hall" and one in hall 1 aka "computer hardware hall" - each of these stands could easily fit a Jumbo Jet).

Interestingly after releasing several regular phones in "Ultra" series (including the thinnest mobile phone in the world), now Samsung is extending "Ultra" line with introduction of "Ultra 2" and availability of Ultra also in smartphones (Samsung i600 = ultra messaging) and UMPCs (Samsung Q1 Ultra = new UMPC from Samsung).

* * * * *

We were the first in the world to present first review of Samsung i600 - at IFA trade show in September 2006 (see here) but now Samsung is presenting i600 again, and this time it is coming to market for good.

Samsung i600 is a smartphone with genuine scroll wheel, HSDPA and built-in Wi-Fi. It is known in USA but without Wi-Fi and under different name: Samsung BlackJack.

Interestingly "Ultra messaging" text appears during boot sequence of Samsung i600 - before Windows Mobile splash screen!

It is good to see the word "podcasting" being mentioned in the specifications:

... what is not particularly strange considering that Podcast fetching application (client) pre-installed in this phone:

When it comes to the processor here is the final answer:

... what means: it is TI OMAP1710!

Also the fancy home screen plugin from Samsung was presented (we will publish video recording of this plugin in action later on - come back to this news item later!):

Obviously i600 was presented in the "Ultra" line:

... and even huge model of i600 was rotating to attract attention of visitors:

While there were many units of Samsung i600 at the stand of Samsung - probably more than 20! - we have noticed mentioning of Windows Mobile only in one place:

Conclusion: Samsung i600 is an amazing phone and if this type of phones - QWERTY keyboard for single handed usage, no touch screen but genuine scroll wheel available, HSDPA and Wi-Fi included, podcasting application pre-installed - is something for you, Samsung has hardly any competition because Motorola Q q9 has no scroll wheel and 3G version of HTC Excalibur seems to be delayed...

Stay tuned for second part of our report about Samsung at CeBIT 2007: "Samsung presents ULTRA - part 2 of 2 - UMPC" !
