Xten Networks, Inc., announced it has released X-PRO, its new SIP User Agent (softphone) for Windows PCs & Wireless PocketPC/CE devices. X-PRO can be used to make free IP-to-IP calls [...] or can be used to make IP-to-Phone calls using a pre-paid calling service Let´s face it: VoIP (Voice over IP networks) will become soon strong competition for regular, ordinary cellular networks. Due to extremely fast growth of Wi-Fi (=wireless LAN) networks, we can soon expect situation, when making phone calls through your Wi-Fi equipped PDA will be very cost-effective and will start replacing cellular phones. While cell phones of today are not yet equipped with Wi-Fi cards, we can envision a scenario, when you put Wi-Fi SD card into your MS Smartphone (yes, it has SDIO card slot!) and you use VoIP through Wi-Fi to make phone calls. Devices that integrate cell phone, Wi-Fi (and Bluetooth) without the need to add extension cards, are already available on the horizon in form of concept designs like this one:

X-PRO can be used to make free IP-to-IP calls using a service such as pulver.com´s Free World Dialup (http://www.freeworldialup.com) or can be used to make IP-to-Phone calls using a pre-paid calling service such as deltathree´s iConnectHere (http://www.xten.com/providers.php). Xten has also released a feature-rich FREE softphone dubbed X-Lite, which does not include some of X-PRO´s premium features such as conferencing and multi-proxy, but still provides the same level of call quality. Both X-PRO and X-Lite are fully compatible with other SIP User Agents including Cisco 7900 Series IP Phones and ATA 186 Analog Telephone Adapters. X-PRO is available as a stand-alone product or packaged with a SIP Proxy Server thereby providing an attractive enterprise solution. X-PRO, which retails for $49, has all the features and functionality of a small business phone system, meaning that a growing company could use X-PRO in place of a traditional PBX.
