Palm decides to develop Linux based Palm OS itself BUT stays commited to Windows Mobile April 10, 2007 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. Disgruntled by extremely poor results of PalmSource (now owned by Japanese company of name "Access") Palm corporation has decided to develop its own Linux based operating system for smartphones. Shortly speaking: development of Palm OS has stagnated for many years already, and Linux based version of Palm OS that was being developed by PalmSource/Access was not developed fast/good enough, so Palm had no choice but to start developing their Linux based (because Linux, not Symbian is open source) mobile OS. Interestingly this major, monumental decision of Palm, doesn't mean that Palm is dropping Windows Mobile and contrary is the truth: during the announcemnt Palm has underlined commitment to Windows Mobile - in the name of "differentiation":
Furthermore Palm has no plans to licence its Linux based platform, although Palm has indicated clearly in announcement that Windows Mobile Treo will not be discontinued: – Continued investment in both Windows Mobile and Palm OS platforms [...] Platform architecture enables common software and high leverage across products for both: – PalmOS – Windows Mobile Related links:
