SlingPlayer Mobile released now also in UK April 29, 2007 [General] | By Edward J. R. While SlingPlayer Mobile (see also: SlingPlayer Mobile review over UMTS, SlingPlayer Mobile review over Wi-Fi), that makes it possible to watch your regular TV remotely, is not broadly available for Symbian, a version for Windows Mobile (both smartphone and Pocket PC) was available for a long time already. Although the SlingPlayer Mobile purchased through American store was working fine with SlingBox-es located in UK (here: viewing Channel 4 from UK):
... now it has been released directly for British customers: In an unusually quiet move, Sling Media has added SlingPlayer Mobile for Windows Mobile, both Pocket PC and Smartphone versions, to their UK online store. In fact, its possible UK owners have been able to purchase either Windows Mobile version for almost a week. Either it was a move already coming, or Dave has some exceptional presentation skills. There's no indication that the SlingPlayer Mobile software being offered to the UK market is any different than what's available to the US and Canada, and actually looks like the exact same thing. However, this doesn't mean that remote control capablility will be limited to home devices found in the US or Canada. Remote commands are stored in the Slingbox, so as long as the device (like a Sky box) can currently be controlled by SlingPlayer on your home computer, it will also be controllable through the Windows Mobile client. Commentary: while it is understandable that SlingMedia wants to assure maximum adaptation to local market, it should sell all products globally right from the scratch - instead of generating an unnecessary buzz. Anyway SlingBox in combination with SlingPlayer Mobile is a brilliant solution and if you travel abroad (or to another state in USA) but you would like to keep up with your local TV, then it makes it possible swiftly!
