HTC betrays Microsoft for Google ? May 12, 2007 [General] | By Edward J. R. Google ordered phones at HTC! Google brand is number one in USA and Microsoft is only in place number 3, so no wonder that HTC has not said "no". Clearly it does not mean that HTC stops making Windows Mobile phones but it just means that HTC gets just another revenue source and more experiences: High Tech Computer (HTC) landed orders from Google for handsets with shipments to start at the end of 2007 and may reach 1M units as it hit global market in 2008. The Google handset has Texas Instruments' (TI) 3G platform and EDGE, has built-in G-mail and Google search and may adopt dual brand (Google and the service provider) but it will not have GPS functionality. Google may likely partner with Orange, a European telecom provider, for the launching of the handset but it is not closing its doors on other providers. Source: THT Business Research. Commentary: clearly Windows Mobile still is core business for HTC but this cooperatioin with Google may (hopefully) help also Windows Mobile phones: after all Google Maps for Windows Mobile stand-alone application is already available:
... and the only thing that is missiing is native (non-Java) Gmail application for Windows Mobile! Credit: Steven Gill.
