More bad news for i-mate June 05, 2007 [General] | By Edward J. R. Jim Morrison who is a CEO and founder of i-mate is Scottish so no wonder that Scottish press is closely following situation of i-mate, although now it is based in Dubai and not in Edinburgh... It said serious problems had beset its business after it had signed supply deals with three handset manufacturers in Asia - Inventec Corporation, Tech Faith Intelligent Handset Technology and Arima Communications Corporation - to develop new products. There had been insufficient stock to fulfil existing orders, and then quality problems with other stock resulted in those units having to be recalled. [...] I-mate is banking on its development of new products, which it says are "technically superior to other Windows Mobile devices in the marketplace". But it said it was unlikely to start shipping in significant volumes until the second half of the year. To read more, click here. Commentary: it is a bit of exaggeration to call i-mate a "mobile device maker" yet - because by now it was just re-branding phones designed and manufactured by others... and only the "Ultimate" series of phones is designed by i-mate and is supposed to be manufactured by Arima only for i-mate! However "Ultimate" series of phones is not on sale yet and in meantime other companies, notably HTC, Toshiba and E-TEN are rolling out their new 3G phones and due to the fact that "Ultimate" series has no built-in GPS, clearly it looks like this summer also latest i-mate phones will be overtaken by competition - and i-mate will no longer be able to claim any superiority! Now, with blame game that i-mate played on its own manufacturers, it will be also difficult to regain trust of end customers.
