O2 Europe to release HTC Touch but with UMTS / 3G ?
June 09, 2007 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.
Just take a look at this phone and notice "U" (U = UMTS) in title bar:
While HTC is available now in Europe from online retailers, T-Mobile and Orange, it looks like also O2 Europe will start selling it too...
... but unfortunately above mentioned "U" in the title bar is a result of photo-doctoring - a screen shot from other phone was placed over HTC Touch branded by O2 as "Xda Nova"!
According to the leaflet of O2 Europe, by now following information is known:
- O2 Xda Nova is to be released by the end of June 2007 (i.e. this month)
- generally specifications very similar to specifications of HTC Touch with some differences
- weight: 120 g (HTC Touch: 112 g)
- GSM/GPRS quadband (HTC Touch: GSM/GPRS/EDGE tri-band), no UMTS (despite the screen shot that shows otherwise)
Conclusion: it is good to see that also a quand-band variant of HTC Touch will be available, so that this phone will be sellable also in USA. Historically O2 was the first mobile operator, that was selling HTC-manufactured phones and only operators like "3" in UK - that operate only 3G/UMTS network - will not pick this phone, due to the lack of 3G support. Very bad support for EDGE in most countries in EU however will result in rather moderate sales of this phone - as mobile operators prefer to expose 3G phones - to take advantage of their 3G networks in which they invested big money. To appeal more broadly to operators in Europe, HTC would need to release 3G version of HTC touch, possibly with a camera with autofocus, that after launch of Nokia N95 has become also "a must" in Europe...
