MEDC 2007 Europe keynote - Windows Mobile, Windows Embedded, services June 25, 2007 [General] | By Edward J. R. Later on we will publish full video recording of this presentation but in meantime we present full high-quality audio recording and short description with photos... The keynote at MEDC Europe 2007 was presented by John O'Rourke from Microsoft USA:
...with help of Jason Langridge from Microsoft UK and Derek Snyder from Microsoft USA. Shortly speaking there are 3 main topics of MEDC: platforms (including Windows Mobile), tools and services:
Windows Mobile not only is growing in the area of device choice but also all Microsoft divisions are contributing mobile-ization of their products too:
The Windows Mobile 6 that is current version of Windows Mobile was presented by Jason Langridge:
... who presented new features of Windows Mobile 6 in usability area:
John O'Rourke mentioned that apart from new Windows Mobile 6 devices there are several old devices that are upgrade-able to Windows Mobile 6 and that somewhere on the website of Microsoft one can find a web page with list of this upgrade-able phones:
As it was in other MEDC events this year, a "tounge-in-cheek" video about oPhone phone was presented too (mainly to underline the need to handle various resolutions in Windows Mobile devices):
Derek Snyder was presenting innovations in Windows Mobile 6 from the software developer point of view:
... including utilization of "Microsoft push" for enterprise applications where for example one truck driver can push information not only to the center but also to another truck driver:
Derek Snyder presented also Microsoft Expression Blend 2 that makes it possible to develop Silverlight applications (Silverlight = Microsoft's answer to Adobe Flash):
... and also a Silverlight application (presentation) running inside of a Windows Mobile phone was presented:
... but still no release date for Silverlight for Windows Mobile was announced unfortunately! Next Windows Embedded was presented, including the future (next) versions of Windows Embedded operating systems, including next Windows CE and Vista Based Windows XP Embedded:
Apparently Texas Instruments has just become Microsoft partner in Window Embedded area:
Next Derek Snyder (again!) presented a demo:
... this time about Microsoft Robotics, i.e. programming robots powered by Windows CE with Microsoft Visual Studio. He presentd also Second Life -like physics-based simulation environment for Microsoft programmed robots:
... and new kiosk applications based on Windows Embedded and programmed with WPF thanks to which nice transition effects were visible:
Next services were discussed:
... including ability to control your home through a plugin to your Media Center PC:
Conclusion: MEDC conferences are mainly for developers and thus most of topics covered there are not of interest to end users, however stay tuned for our reports from MEDC Europe 2007, that could be of interest to you, also if you are not a developer!
