iPhone does not change anything - says Microsoft
July 24, 2007 [General] | By Edward J. R.

NBC's Tom Costello visited Microsoft's campus in Redmond, near Seattle, to check out what is Microsoft up to, when it comes to "what is Microsoft's answer to the iPhone?". He recorded a video report about it.

Interestingy Robbie Bach, who is a President in Microsoft for Entertainment Devices (including Xbox and Windows Mobile), says about iPhone:

it doesn't change our strategy any, it doesn't change our approach

Commentary: one could expect better cooperation of Xbox and Windows Mobile as a result of latest restructuring, but till this day one cannot connect Windows Mobile over USB cable to Xbox 360 to exchange files. Also despite claims of Microsoft that Windows Mobile is also for consumers, not just for professionals and enterprises, still Windows Mobile phones have no access to Zune marketplace. And now, when Apple iPhone is on sale, isntead of saying "multi-touch support and fluid screen transitions, together with full-AJAX in Internet Explorer are coming to next version of Windows Mobile" Microsoft is claiming that Apple iPhone doesn't change anything. With such approach - burying the head in the sand and pretending that nothing has happened - Microsoft is doomed to lose market share to Apple. Obviously Apple iPhone still is less powerful than Windows Mobile - lack of ability to run third party applications, less hardware features than most Windows Mobile phones (no 3G, no GPS, lower screen resolution) - but window of opportunity when Microsoft will be able to catch up to Apple in other areas (fluid transitions, multi-touch support, full-AJAX compatible browser) is quickly closing down. In these times there is no place for complacency.
