HTC experiences small debacle with HTC TyTN ROM upgrade with Windows Mobile 6 August 03, 2007 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. Windows Mobile 6 ROM upgrade is the hottest item in Windows Mobile community nowadays.. Interestingly users wanted to get official ROM upgrade with Windows Mobile 6 for Hermes so much, that before HTC officially released it, they have published user name and password to HTC's secret FTP server, downloaded all the ROM upgrades and re-published them on the Internet in various places! Later on HTC has published official news item, dated back 2 days, pretending that nothing happened! This news item also links to their club (accessible only upon providing of proper IMEI) and while download links are publicly accessible (after registration) without password, the original source and place was password protected. All in all no big damage done but still little cover up by HTC is taking place - hiding the fact that people from public got access to secret, password-protected, FTP site with ROM upgrades waiting for operator customizations. Anyway now this password is no longer valid and the FTP server is protected again but the leaked ROM upgrades are floating now on the Internet! To avoid any legal issues we will not publish links to relevant external sites, that contain information about that secret FTP server and about downloads of these leaked ROM images, and we recommend to all end users to get Windows Mobile 6 ROM upgrade from official sources i.e. your operator or distributor and not from dodgy Internet sites! Let us not forget that ROM tweaking is a popular sport among enthusiasts so theoretically it is even possible that somebody will publish "official" ROM upgrade on external non-HTC, non-operator, websites with some additional software, that will for example collect information about users and send it to the author of the software! So in any case: always use official source! Credit: Sergiopi.
