Fujitsu-Siemens discontinues Windows Mobile PDAs and phones August 12, 2007 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. Fujitsu-Siemens has released several models of Windows Mobile powered PDAs, and also one Windows Mobile powered smartphone with 3G and GPS:
Now however it is over: Yes, that's correct. We will withdraw from market of handheld and handheld-GPS devices till the end of 2007. Our decision we have taken based on the usual review of our portfolio, where we noticed that traditional PDA market has been shrinking for several years already and several other manufacturers has left it. While market for wireless PDAs is growing, market for PDA is moving on low level and with low volumes. The trend is to replace traditional handhelds with other devices like GSP navigation devices or smartphones. We will not invest in these product areas. The Pocket Loox T800 series is still, as previously, a technological milestone in landscape of wireless handhelds. We were growing in business years 2005 to 2007 over 80 percent and we have achieved significant growth of our market share in this segment. Further growth in handheld market would mean for us significant investments in new technologies and R&D. Handhelds and Handhelds with push e-mail will remain a niche market. In future these services will be overtaken by smartphones - which are not our business area. We have observed, that other IT-manufacturers, that are offering such devices, are struggling (have difficulties). In mobility area we will concentrate on our core business - notebooks and Tablet PC devices. ... says Amy Flécher - speaker of Fujitsu-Siemens. Original source of this story and more information can be found here and here. Conclusion: after Dell now also Fujitsu-Siemens is withdrawing not just from Windows Mobile but also generally from handheld market. While Dell never have released a Windows Mobile phone, the T800 smartphone from Fujitsu-Siemens was an interesting offering - although by now outdated - no HSDPA and too thick. Considering how many hundreds of millions of USD is Nokia spending on marketing of their smartphones, and after release of Apple iPhone, the situation in smartphone is becoming harsh.
