Live from IFA 2007 : Samsung continues commitment to Windows Mobile with Samsung i620 August 31, 2007 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R. In the times when touch-screen-based mobile phones are (again) hip, Samsung may have problems with tiny beautiful new smartphone powered by Windows Mobile, that however has no touch-screen:
This smartphone - Samsung i620 - offers slide-out QWERTY keyboard, what makes it, combined with very small size, very comfortable:
The slide-out mechanism hides camera on the back side and generally feels solid:
The specifications are a bit disappointing though:
... because this smartphone doesn't offer maximum transfer speed currently available in HSDPA networks in Europe, which is: 3.6 Mbit/second - it offers only 1.8 Mbit/second speed. Make no mistake however: the Samsung i600 (known in US-American variant as "Samsung BlackJack") is not being replaced yet and it is still being offered (and even Windows Mobile 6 ROM upgrade for this phone is available here, albeit UK has been removed from this upgrade (credit: Pagemakers)). The Samsung i600 has BlackBerry-typical scroll-wheel that is missing in Samsung i620 what at first glance sounds like mistake. However unlike it is in Motorola Q9h that has no wheel at all, in Samsung i620 there is a wheel but not on the right side of the phone, but around the cursor keys! Indeed users can scroll the menus with use of a wheel - similarly like it is in HTC Artemis. In other words: Samsung has not removed this feature (like Motorola did with Q9h) but just moved it to the other place. Having a wheel in a phone without touch-screen is vital, so it is good to hear that Samsung takes care of customers. Unfortunately Samsung i620 has no WiFi that is avaialble in Samsung i610 smartphone... Conclusion: if you fancy very small Windows Mobile smartphone with HSDPA, then Samsung i620 may be for you! The design is beautiful and more classy than design of i610 and slide-out keyboard prevents onlookers from even knowing that your phone has QWERTY keyboard! In closed form Samsung i620 looks innocently - just like another Samsung phone with slide-out mechanism...
