O2 Germany launches O2 Xda comet Windows Mobile phone with 624 MHz processor and 3G
September 04, 2007 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

O2 Germany may have the weakest coverage among all 4 German mobile operators, but they are trying to make it up with interesting handsets for which they have exclusivity inside of Germany, like LG Prada or this O2-branded O2 Xda Comet:

Some highlights about this Windows Mobile phone:
  • primary camera: 2 megapixel with macro function but no autofocus
  • secondary camera: VGA resolution camera for 3G video calling
  • processor: Intel PXA 270 XScale 624 MHz
  • FM radio
  • support for 3G: UMTS and HSDPA (unknown yet which HSDPA speed is supported - 1.8 Mbit/second or 3.6 Mbit/second)
  • connectivity: WiFi, Bluetooth, infra-red, USB
  • memory card: miniSD
  • display: 2.7 inch, 240x320 pixels
  • quad-band
  • dimensions: 106x58x18 mm
  • weight: 148 g
  • stand-by: 8 days
  • availability: beginning of October, at O2 Germany (unknown yet whether it will come also to O2 UK and O2 Asia)
More information about this phone can be found at O2 Germany here (pages 4 and 5 of Flash-based newspaper) and here (PDF).

Interestingly O2 Germany in marketing materials about this phone has photoshopped a page from PC Internet browser into small screen of this device. This is misleading advertising because O2 Xda comet certainly will not have an Internet browser that can present pages in a way how they look on PC (like for example Picsel Browser for Windows Mobile).

Conclusion: since O2 Germany has prohibitively high prices for mobile Internet access through their networks (combined with total lack of unlimited flat rate), not many people will appreciate HSDPA feature of this phone. However video calling and very fast processor may appeal to some people...
