Era of SDHC starts: Kingston starts offering 4GB microSDHC cards October 07, 2007 [General] | By Edward J. R. SDHC is a standard for SD cards, that makes it possible to use higher-capacity cards in various devices. Usage of SDHC starts making sense with 4GB (available sizes are: 4GB, 6GB, 16GB, 32GB) and more because 2GB cards are handled without problem with standard SD specification. By now full-size SDHC cards have been very popular for camcorders and digital still cameras and particularly in the era of High Definition video recording they are very useful. Now however a world-renowned vendor of memory solutions - Kingston - starts offering microSDHC 4GB card for less than 100 dollars and since several Windows Mobile phones (including HTC Kaiser aka HTC TyTN II) are supporting SDHC standard (and most of them nowadays have microSD card slots), for the first time application of SDHC in mobile phones becomes possible! Interestingly Kingstons mentions explicitly HTC - the market leader in Windows Mobile phones - as one of manufacturers that support SDHC: More information from Kingston follows. * * * * * Kingston Technology Ready for Next-Gen Mobile Phone, Digital Device Memory Needs with microSDHC Cards Faster Speed, Greater Storage Capacity of 4GB microSDHC Format Helps Wireless Consumers Optimize Content, Data in Increasingly Complex Mobile World Kingston Technology Company, Inc., the independent world leader in memory products, today announced it is releasing microSD High-Capacity (SDHC) Flash memory cards, starting with a 4GB microSDHC card in a Class 4 speed rating. Providing speed and capacity increases in the smallest footprint available, Kingston® microSDHC cards are perfect to meet the rising communication and multimedia demands of mobile phones and digital devices able to take advantage of the advanced expansion memory platform. "As next-generation mobile phones promise cutting edge functionality in ever-smaller form factors, demands increase on hardware to deliver these features, particularly in the area of expansion memory where storage and read/write performance becomes greater," said Jean Wong, Flash memory product manager, Kingston. "Kingston is following the natural progression of mobile technology and we timed our microSDHC roll-out to be in step as the need materializes," added Wong. The new microSDHC 4GB card, part number #: (SDC4/4GB) carries a suggested price of $91.00 (MSRP U.S.) and is the first offering in the Kingston microSDHC product line. The format may emerge as the predominant mobile memory standard as more handset manufacturers, including Blackberry, HTC, LG, Motorola, and Nokia embrace it with new or planned microSDHC-compatible mobile phones. Concurrent with the release of the 4GB card, Kingston is launching an adapter pack, part number #: (SDC4/4GB+2ADP) to help consumers optimize using their microSDHC cards with PCs and other digital devices. The microSDHC 4GB card with two adapters (mini- and full-size SD) has a suggested price of $93.00. Able to hold more than 2,000 images, 1,000 digital music tracks or 8 hours of MPEG4 video, the Kingston 4GB microSDHC card surpasses capacities beyond the 2GB threshold of the original microSD card format. While identical in physical size to the original microSD card, microSDHC is compatible with microSDHC host devices only and not backward compatible with standard microSD-enabled devices or readers.
