Rumor: next versions of Windows Mobile = Windows Mobile 6.1 + Windows Mobile 7 October 20, 2007 [General] | By Edward J. R. Generally it looks like Windows Mobile 7 is postponed till 2009 and is not coming any time soon, but Windows Mobile 6.1 is an improved Windows Mobile 6 Standard (for phones without touch-screen) and it will be supposedly announced in February 2008 at Mobile World Congress (formerly known as 3GSM World Congress - Windows Mobile 6 was announced there too): Microsoft would be announcing Windows Mobile 6.1 in February, devices shipping in May. The story has since been pulled (interesting), but the scuttlebut is that the main feature of 6.1 will be a new interface very similar to what Microsoft and Vodafone developed for the Treo 500v: a carousel. The carousel (check out The Unwired Video of the interface) is actually really cool. You move left or right to switch between different "zones" and then up and down to choose an "action." The idea is that instead of thinking in terms of "applications," you can think in terms of "what do I want to do today?" (Ah, Microsoft slogans, how I love them). So instead of having to go into the Tasks app to make a new task, you just flip to the proper portion of the carousel to do it directly. To learn more click HERE. Commentary: the brutal truth about Windows Mobile for touch-screens is that without support for multi-touch no innovation can be appealing enough - now that Apple iPhone has raised the barrier by introducing mulit-touch. However in area of Windows Mobile for phones without touch-screen Microsoft can indeed innovate and Microsoft has even patented a new user interface in this area. While phones with touch-screen to a big extent remain in high-end market sector, the biggest volumes of sales are with phones without touch-screen and Microsoft's innovation in form of Windows Mobile 6.1 can indeed boost sales.
