HTC betrays Microsoft for the sake of Google?
November 05, 2007 [General] | By Edward J. R.

Today, this very day, in history of mobile phone industry will be called "a G-Day" because it is today when Google has announced a mobile phone platform "Android" formerly known (in rumor phase) as "Google Phone".

Interestingly HTC is mentioned as one of the main partners of Google in this initiative! There is no denying that HTC has achieved what it has achieved (multi-billion turnover) mainly thanks to Microsoft and thanks to production of Windows Mobile phones. Now however it seems that everything that HTC owes to Microsoft is unimportant and Google is the new big friend of HTC:

A broad alliance of leading technology and wireless companies today joined forces to announce the development of Android, the first truly open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices. Google Inc., T-Mobile, HTC, Qualcomm, Motorola and others have collaborated on the development of Android through the Open Handset Alliance, a multinational alliance of technology and mobile industry leaders.

[...]

"HTC's trademark on the mobile industry has been its ability to drive cutting-edge innovation into a wide variety of mobile devices to create the perfect match for individuals," said Peter Chou, Chief Executive Officer, HTC Corp. "Our participation in the Open Handset Alliance and integration of the Android platform in the second half of 2008 enables us to expand our device portfolio into a new category of connected mobile phones that will change the complexion of the mobile industry and re-create user expectations of the mobile phone experience."

Commentary: it is too early to estimate whether HTC betrays Microsoft or not. Clearly HTC is well positioned from the Google's point of view because it has very good relations with mobile operators, including T-Mobile that is also a part of Google's alliance. HTC can therefore deliver hardware that operators want and fill it with software that Google wants. There is absolutely no denying that without Microsoft the HTC corporation would be nothing but we are confident that HTC stays committed to Windows Mobile.
