Webkit for Windows Mobile is not vaporware - CTO of Wake 3 claims November 29, 2007 [General] | By Edward J. R. Nowadays end users expect nothing less than full web browsing in their mobile phones. By full web browsing one understands that web pages are being displayed (and look like) exactly the same as in desktop browsers (sometimes with "overview mode with zooming" for easier navigation) and that JavaScript support is very strong so that AJAX applications work fine. Since both Google Android and Apple iPhone have built-in web browsers based on Webkit open source project it was great news to learn that Webkit is being ported also to Windows Mobile. Interestingly although no demonstration version is available, this is not a vaporware, claims Daniel (Dan) Zucker, CTO of Wake3: We are not now releasing a public beta. You (and others who have requested more information) will be notified as soon as one is available. I do not appreciate your charge that Wake3 is vaporware. To refute let me point out: 1. A video demo of our software running on hardware is available for viewing at www.wake3.com 2. Anyone interested in seeing a demo in person is invited to our offices in Palo Alto, California. I will personally give you a demo. Please watch for Wake3 coming soon. Best Regards, Dan Wake3, CTO Conclusion: obviously there is some internal version of Webkit-based browser for Windows Mobile available internally within Wake3 company. However it is yet to be clarified whether it will be offered for end users for purchase or only as embedded into some selected phones made by manufacturers, that pay license fee to Wake3. We can only hope that this browser will be available also for end customers for purchase because otherwise Wake3 may end up like Picsel Technologies that managed to sell their promising browser for Windows Mobile to Samsung, but later on developments stalled and now this browser is no longer able to compete with anything. It is also worth mentioning that both Microsoft and Opera are releasing new browsers: Microsoft will release major upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 and Opera is about to release Opera Mobile 9 browser - so Wake3 must hurry up because window of opportunity (no pun intended!) for them is closing quickly...
