Software Review : Zumobi
December 14, 2007 [General] | By Edward J. R.

What is Zumobi? Think of it as zoom-able ("Z" in Zumobi comes from "Zoom") set of tiles, where each tile can contain static or interactive content, that is being fetched from Internet and/or viewable offline.

Navigating through tiles is particularly easy in case of smartphones with keypad or keyboard because by single key press users can select tiles that should be zoomed. Zooming is done with fancy fluid screen effects so it is pleasant to use.

Zumobi could be also considered as multi-platform widget container that would like to replace plain web browsing, off-line feed readers and Flash applications. Since Microsoft still has not released Silverlight for Windows Mobile and latest Flash is still not available for download for this platform, Zumobi is a breath of fresh air...

Here is how the main window looks like right after the launch:

After zooming operation user can see 4 tiles in close-up instead of 16 tiles in the initial screen:

Tiles can be various things like news feeds with photos:

... or games:

... or goofy stuff like cartoon characters that can speak:

Zumobi points out clearly that some Internet traffic is involved so if you are not on some unlimited connection (unlimited flat rate cellular data or WiFi) you may get big bill from your wireless carrier:

Interestingly users can receive and send Zumobi tiles to other users (remeber: you have to log in to use Zumobi):

The business model of Zumobi seems to be in displaying of advertisement banners while some tiles are being used.

Conclusion: Zumobi is a nice try to improve user experience in mobile phones. While some other programs offer set of applications that bring more or less similar things as Zumobi, the advantage of Zumobi seams to lie in ability to download new tiles, which are kind of widgets that can be created by fans and content providers. While initial set of tiles may be not too impressive, the ability to create new tiles has big potential. It remains yet to be seen what tiles are possible with Zumobi and it would be nice to have some integration of Zumobi Tiles into home screens of Windows Mobile phones, but already now users can start using Zumobi to get additional fun out of their phones.
