Phone Review : E-TEN Glofiish X800
December 23, 2007 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

E-TEN Glofiish X800 is the only phone on the market that combines VGA dispay (640x480 pixels = 2 times more pixels than iPhone has), built-in GPS, WiFi and 3G in a pocket-size form factor. Other manufacturers are offering phones with similar features but either in much bigger form factor or with display of 4 times lower resolution (QVGA = 320x240 pixels). Although there are some Windows Mobile phones with high resolution display on the market, none of them offers built-in GPS combined with 3G (yet), but E-TEN Glofiish X800 offers a built-in and extremely sensitive SiRF Star III GPS chipset!

The E-TEN Glofiish X800 comes in a box in E-TEN-typical orange colors (here: lying on a 12 inch Tablet PC):

The specifications of X800 are clearly mentioned on the back of the box:

... and reveal one interesting thing: this phone is powered actually by 500 MHz processor (Samsung SC3 2442) and not 400 MHz as some sources claimed! Notice also 2 cameras mentioned: one with auto-focus for photo taking and one with fixed-focus for video calling.

Here is how this phone looks in the front:

Battery is easily removable and after removal of battery one can notice that this phone is Made in Taiwan:

To remove the battery one must first remove the battery cover - what can be easily done when one pulls it from the bottom first. As you can see above, the SIM card slot is easily accessible. You can also notice above that the camera on the back is equiped with a flash light and self-portrait mirror.

The battery in this phone is made with use of the latest technology (Li-ion Polimer) and is of very high capacity of 1530 mAh:

At the bottom of the phone one can notice microSD card slot (SDHC compatible), microphone and industry standard miniUSB connector:

At the top of the phone one can notice "GPS" letters indicating that GPS antenna is located here:

GPS in X800 is very sensitive (see below!) so lack of external GPS antenna connector is not a problem.

On the right side of the phone one can find power switch and camera button:

On the left side of the phone one can notice volume up/down button, auxilary button (by default assigned to voice notes but one can change its assignment), reset slot (needle needed to use it naturally) and a 2.5 mm stereo handset slot (not compatible with standard 2.5 mm stereo headsets).

The most amazing feature of this phone is a display of big resolution of 640x480 pixels (here presented in scale one to one):

The GPS integrated into X800 is of very high sensitivity and we were able to get GPS fix very quickly and even when the vehicle was moving:

In the package one can find above mentioned GPS viewer software (includes compass) but also a utility to fetch satellite data from the Internet to obtain even faster GPS fix.

Apart from many other features X800 has also FM radio receiver (a side-effect of having TMC traffic avoiding for GPS navigation software) that supports European, American and Japanese FM bands:

Here are some photos taken with X800's camera in London: traditional English breakfast, skyline of London City, crossing of Tottenham Court Road with Oxford Street, a bookshelf in Foyles bookshop, Victoria Station.

To test reliability we have been streaming radio over 3G network with this phone and the stream was holding over 5 hours without problems!

Advantages:
  • VGA display combined with 3G and GPS in pocket size form factor
  • fast processor: 500 MHz!
  • standard miniUSB connector so that you can re-use your standard miniUSB cables
  • FM radio
  • all connectivity on board including tri-band 3G and quad-band 2G (works in USA, Europe and Asia), Bluetooth, WiFi, GSM, EDGE
  • SDHC support
  • automatic call recording with VITO Audio Notes works both for ingoing and outgoing calls
  • supports 3G video calling
Disadvantages:
  • 2.5 mm stereo headset connector is not a standard one, but one must admit that also HTC uses non-standard stereo headset connectors! The included stereo headset is of very high sound quality but obviously if you lose it you would have to buy another one made by E-TEN and some people are already used to some other high-quality 2.5 mm stereo headsets (for example: from Sennheiser) that can't be used with this phone (they play only on one channel). X800 supports however, similarly like all Windows Mobile phones, the A2DP Bluetooth profile - so users can certainly use Bluetooth stereo headsets too!
  • RAM size could be bigger although 64 MB may be enough if you remember to close inactive applications
Conclusion: for people interested in having sensitive GPS in combination with 3G phone with VGA display E-TEN Glofiish X800 may be the answer! Unlike HTC phones with VGA dispay it is small and can be placed in the pocket (leather case is included in the package) or placed on your belt. Unlike Toshiba phones it offers not only high resolution but also built-in GPS.
