Phone Review : ETEN Glofiish X600
January 05, 2008 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

While X800 is a high-end phone with 3G and VGA display (see also: our review of ETEN Glofiish X800), the ETEN Glofiish X600 has neither 3G nor VGA display but it is smaller (however X800 is also small and pocketable) and has other goodies, including super-sensitive SiRF Star III GPS receiver, relatively fast processor (400 MHz by Samsung), WiFi, Bluetooth and additionally EDGE support - if you would need faster than GPRS mobile Internet access!

While X800 has a more mettalic feel to it, the case of X600 is rubbery-like what may be of interest to some people.

Firstly, here is the review of software of X600 in video form:

... and here is how this phone looks like (front view):

... and on the back side one can find 2 megapixel camera (without autofocus):

To remove the battery cover finger nail is useful - one needs to leverage the battery cover at the bottom of the phone.

Then, before removing the battery user needs to remember to unlock the battery:

... so that it looks like this (note the unlocked battery state):

The SIM card slot is not movable what is not bad idea (less movable parts = higher stability):

The styluls is of telescopic type:

... and leather case is included (note: camera button and power-on button on the side):

On the other side there are more buttons (volume up/down, voice command/recording, reset button) and stereo headset connector:

On the top of the phone one can see holes to attach a strap (note big letters "GPS" denoting built-in GPS receiver):

At the bottom one can see microphone hole, microSD slot, miniUSB connector (at last industry-standard miniUSB! - suitable both for synchronizing and for charging) and a stylus:

Advantages:
  • built-in super sensitive GPS receiver with SiRF Star III chipset
  • cheap
  • very nice to held in hand due to rubbery feeling (but it may be objective)
  • built-in WiFi and Bluetooth
  • EDGE support ! (not all 2G phones support EDGE)
  • fast processor (400 MHz)
  • industry standard miniUSB connector so you can use one cable for all your devices
  • leather case is in the package for free
  • GPS is not only sensitive but also satellite update (over Internet) application is included to accelerate GPS fix (which anyway is super fast)
  • battery lock mechanism for increased stability
Disadvantages:
  • non-standard 2.5 mm stereo headset connector (but HTC also uses non-standard ones and inlcluded stereo headset is of high quality)
  • 64 MB of RAM memory (may be enough however, if you remember to close unused applications)
