Bill Gates says that Microsoft has no desire to compete with iPhone ? January 09, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R. Yes, Bill Gates said something to German press, but interpretations of this are totally wrong, including that Microsoft is not interested in smartphone market and is not going to release any competitive products to iPhone! So what is going on? Was Bill Gates smoking something lately or is it again another misunderstanding invented by incompetent journalists? In reality Bill Gates said that Microsoft will not be making mobile phones, like Apple does (Apple offers both hardware and software), but instead it will be focusing on its own product - Windows Mobile operating system (software only). In other words: Microsoft will compete with Apple but indirectly, i.e. it will continue to offer operating system for mobile phones (i.e. Widndows Mobile) but it will not offer mobile phones itself. Obviously there is such thing as Microsoft hardware: Zune media player, Microsoft keyboards, Microsoft mice and Xbox gaming console... but here Bill Gates just confirmed what was previously known! It is also good that Bill Gates repeated it because it means that manufacturers can continue licensing of Windows Mobile without the fear that Microsoft itself will be also making and selling such phones. Please note that Nokia Corporation is licensing Symbian S60 operating system that it is using in their mobile phones what creates unfair competitive advantage to Nokia, that obviously has better access to the platform. However both Google and Microsoft will be offering just operating systems: Google Android and Microsoft Windows Mobile but will not be offering operating system themselves! Here is exactly what was said by Bill Gates (exact translation from German) as answer to the question whether Microsoft will compete with Apple iPhone: "no, this will not do. In business of such smarpthones we are focusing on software with our program Windows Mobile". Conclusion: everything can be misconstrued and since even such preposterous claims like "Microsoft will not offer smartphones" has been published recently, we have felt obliged to explain... In reality Microsoft is and will be competing with iPhone but not directly, not by releasing their own phone! See also: Windows Mobile 7 screenshots and details.
