i-mate on the verge of bankruptcy
January 19, 2008 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.
It looks like i-mate will either go bankrupt or will be purchased by some other company - the situation is that bad and this time even Financial Times confirms it.
Some highlights about i-mate's situation:
- similarly as previously i-mate was blaming some Taiwanese manufacturers for problems, this time i-mate blames Qualcomm that supposedly is not delivering enough of electronic chips
- i-mate can't sell in USA some of their handsets due to patent issues
- Jim Morrison - originally from Scotland, EU - who is a CEO of i-mate said that situation is so grave that they must "review the strategic options for the company" what means practically that everything is possible
- i-mate went public, i.e. was sold on stock market what raised 68 million US dollars but since many years it has financial problems
- it looks like the only chance for i-mate to survive in any form is that some other company will buy it

Conclusion: while previously when i-mate was a distributor of HTC-manufactured phones it thrived, but later HTC taken things over and got rid off unnecessary middlemen and i-mate problems began. When i-mate was distributing HTC phones it was arrogantly claiming that it is developing them jointly with HTC, what was obviously a lie (these phones were not exclusive to i-mate and were both designed and manufactured by HTC itself) and now the fact that i-mate failed with "their own" phones, further proves it. It looks like i-mate - a distributor that wanted to be manufacturer - will be no more soon...
