February 11, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R.
Here we present highlights from this press conference in text (see below) but first here is an independent and full (uncut!) video recording of this press conference consisting of 2 parts, the first is the press conference itself:
... and the second is questions and answers session after the press conference:
If you would like to see these videos inside of your Windows Mobile phone (or just on a PC) then please download video files optimized for Windows Mobile: press conference - main part (49.9 MB) and questions and answers (30 MB).
Some highlights from this press conference (that constitutes the single most important event at Mobile World Congress each year - in which Microsoft participates):
- no Windows Mobile 6.l announcement that was very much expected
- Microsoft is "very excited" (to put it mildly) that Sony Ericsson will be selling Windows Mobile phones branded by Sony Ericsson
- Microsoft acquires Danger - a company that makes operating system and platform for "T-Mobile Sidekick" device of Paris Hilton fame or in other words: Microsoft gets serious about consumer mobile phone market
- top 5 mobile phone makers now use Microsoft software (like wireless ActiveSync for MS Exchange etc) and 4 of them use Windows Mobile
- Microsoft expands into mobile Internet advertising (the expansion of business model into advertising business model)
- club of platinum Windows Mobile devices - many phones achieve sales above one million units sold
- 14 millions of Windows MObile phones sold last year - compared to 4 million of Apple iPhone and 12 million of RIM BlackBerry phones
- unlike very arrogant Apple that offers iPhone only in USA and some bigger, richer countries, Microsoft offers products and services also in emerging markets and smaller countries
- consumer experiences were presented (including gaming! yes!) and it was underlined how Windows Mobile is not just for enterprises but also for consumer market
- MSN Direct Mobile is available for download now, more info at phone.msndirect.com
- in questions and answers session, after the press conference, several questions were asked by journalists
