Using ONLY The Light Side of the Force is DANGEROUS - says Sony Ericsson empire
February 14, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R.

In a galaxy far away (Barcelona) 2 major empires (Sony Ericsson and Motorola) and their The Light Side company (UIQ, that makes user interfaces for smartphones working over Symbian and is owned and financed by these 2 empires) have organized a meeting with Jedi Knights (Microsoft-hostile press) to answer all questions and to ensure them, that the switch to The Dark Side (i.e. to Windows Mobile by Sony Ericsson empire) is not changing bright plans that these 2 empires have regarding The Light Side (i.e. Symbian and UIQ).

We have sent a Lord Sith to find out what is going on at that meeting, what totally astonished Yoda (i.e. Andrew Orlowski from The Register), who was present there:

... because he asked: "The Dark Side I sense in you. Here present why are you?", so we answered something like:

... The Dark Side? You must be talking about that Windows Mobile phone in my pocket and I am here because Sony Ericsson empire now supports also The Dark Side!

Here are some highlights from this meeting (press conference):
  • it was not a typical press conference but 3 tables with people from these 3 companies at each and the main table was in the middle were high managers from Motorola and Sony Ericsson as well as CEO of UIQ were present - and journalists could come to each table and ask questions. Such organization of the event was a very good idea!
  • Sony Ericsson clearly stated that supporting only one platform is "dangerous" and companies should be open to all platforms; Sony Ericsson clearly stated that limitation to only one platform is wrong appraoch (see also: video below!)
  • Sony Ericsson does not exclude possibility that other phones in XPERIA series will be powered by Symbian
  • Sony Ericsson declined to answer the question whether XPERIA X1 phone has a haptic display but was OK because it was event about software of UIQ and not about hardware of Sony Ericsson
  • Motorola guy indicated that Symbian phones with touch-screens from Motorola are coming but he indicated that they will be powered by Symbian UIQ platform! ... so don't hold your breath for Motorola Windows Mobile phones with touch-screen, because clearly Motorola focuses on Windows Mobile Standard (without touch-screen)
  • Motorola and Sony Ericsson have increased recently their investment in UIQ and now UIQ has expanded from over 100 people to over 300 people, of which most are located in Sweden (home country of Ericsson) and in Hungary (other country in EU)
Below you can find a short video snapshot from this event and a photo of the main table (from the left to right behind the table: Motorola, Sony Ericsson, UIQ):
