Review: Samsung i780 - the best phone in category one-handed QWERTY keyboard + touch-screen !
February 15, 2008 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

Form factor is a number one decision that each person, who likes to buy a new mobile phone must consider. Thanks to BlackBerry from RIM the form factor with QWERTY keyboard for single-handed usage is very popular. Thanks to Treo the one-handed QWERTY + touch-screen in one device are very popular too.

One could only speculate why HTC is not manufacturing phones in the Treo-like (one-handed QWERTY + touch-screen) form factor at all, but the fact of the matter is that if you like this form factor, then HTC has nothing to offer!

Here we present a video review of Samsung i780, plus its photos plus a lot of textual descriptions resulting from our testing and from talks with other people. Effectively Samsung i780 is the best phone in this form factor but you should carefully read and watch this review, so that you will know what to expect!

First let's take a look at a video review of Samsung i780 (presented by a Samsung employee!!!):

Now, before taking a look at pictures let's take a look at some specifications:
  • [unique feature] touch-pad or "optical mouse" as Samsung calls it, what means that there is no cursor-pad but instead a flat area that works like touch-pads in notebooks (including a mouse cursor that appears on the display)
  • [unique feature] 320x320 display to show more information than QVGA (240x320)
  • ultra-fast 624 MHz processor from Marvel (a company that purchased XScale processor business from Intel)
  • HSDPA 3.6 MB/s
  • WiFi 802.11 b/g
  • Bluetooth
  • powered by Windows Mobile 6
  • 128 MB of RAM memory
  • proprietary Samsung connectors both for handset and charging so no mini-USB and no 2.5 mm stereo headsets are usable with this phone without adapters
  • assisted GPS is built-in
Interestingly Microsoft was showing Samsung i780 at its "device bar" at Mobile World Congress 2008 without any overlay over Windows Mobile 6 (note specifications too!):

... but at Samsung stand one could see this phone with the following specfiications:

... and with Samsung's overlay over Windows Mobile - designed for easy finger-based navigation (to see this overlay in action - see video above!):

As you can see on the photo below at the bottom of the phone there is nothing and on the left side one can notice (from the top): volum up/down button and reset hole:

On the right side one can notice (from the top): stereo headset + charging connector, micro-SD card slot, media-launch button (invokes a media player).

On the back of the phone one can find 2 megapixel camera (note also transparent plastic cover that is delivered in a package in original state and that shows how to open the battery compartment):

When it comes to availability the Samsung i780 is now on sale at Orange operator accross Europe, including UK. However it is SIM-locked if purchased from Orange. Unlocked version can be either purchased in various online stores or later probably a SIM-unlock for Samsung i780 will be released by somebody (but it is unknown when - if at all). In USA: this phone is available only through private imports.

Conclusion: Samsung i780 is a dream-come-true for many people who are tired of waiting for Palm to release a Treo smartphone with Wi-Fi and GPS. The touch-pad and proprietary connectors may be off-putting for some people but after getting used to, they are usable. All in all Samsung i780 is the best Windows Mobile smartphone in category "one-handed QWERTY keyboard + touch-screen" currently on the market.
