Big upcoming Windows Mobile related announcement revealed ? February 28, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R. Previously we mentioned, that some big Windows Mobile related announcement is coming by the end of April 2008, and now it looks like somebody noticed something interesting that may be the preview of this big announcement: Rich Internet Applications The ability to create Rich Internet Applications on the Windows Mobile platform is coming soon. Stay tuned... ... and you can find this text at main MSDN (MS Developer Network) page for Windows Mobile - it can be found at bottom right of that page. It looks therefore as if this big announcement might be something to do with Microsoft possibly releasing Silverlight for windows mobile! Silverlight essentially is Microsoft's version of Flash - a platform-independent, resolution-independent, scalable (based on vector graphics) platform for delivery of multimedia content. Releasing Silverlight Mobile for Windows Mobile could significantly boost popularity of this multimedia rich-applications platform, because most Windows Mobile phones don't have Flash Lite 3 or any other Flash at all for that matter, and many .NET developers use Windows Mobile phones anyway, so now they would have big motivation and interest to write such Silverlight application knowing that they would run not just in PC and Mac but also in Windows Mobile. Also: in long-term it is unavoidable that Silverlight will be released also for Symbian and not just for Windows Mobile - as Microsoft did with Windows Live. While it is true that everybody in Windows Mobile community and almost all .NET developers would gladly see Silverlight for Windows Mobile, it is in reality something that, at least at the beginning, mainly developers would appreciate. In other words: we don't belive that this Silverlight Mobile for Windows Mobile is that big, Windows Mobile -related announcement to come by the end of April 2008 ! What do you think?
