Downfall of Windows Mobile due to iPhone SDK and help of Microsoft
March 06, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R.

Today Apple announced some stuff... that will influence Windows Mobile ecosystem negatively:
  • Microsoft has licensed ActiveSync to Apple so that now Windows Mobile is not necessary to get good connection to Microsoft Exchange including push email, in other words: Apple iPhone connects to Microsoft Exchange not worse than Windows Mobile
  • Apple released today SDK for iPhone what means, that from now on not just unofficial (hacked) tools but also official SDK will support developers, unlike Visual Studio needed for Windows Mobile software development, that is not free, Apple iPhone SDK is free
  • Apple iPhone applications will be available through Apple Store and Apple will take only 30% of revenues and developers will be able to keep 70%, what is much more than in case of Microsoft-supported Handango store that is ripping off developers and thus Windows Mobile developers instead of 70% developers get 30 to 40% of sales only
  • Apple will give away 100 million USD to support iPhone software developers, compared to zero (0,00) offered by Microsoft to Windows Moible developers, and 10 million offered by Google for Google Android developers
Conclusion: difficult times are coming to Windows Mobile ecosystem (not Microsoft employees though that have cozy corporate jobs) and while it is understandable that Microsoft needs to license ActiveSync to Nokia, Apple and others to keep greasing the big money making machine in form of Microsoft Exchange, but Microsoft should release FREE SDK for native software development for Windows Mobile and stop supporting software stores like Handango that are ripping off developers big time! Microsoft also squanders synergy opportunties by not releasing (yet) Silverlight for Windows Mobile and Xbox Live for Windows Mobile.
