CeBIT 2008: E-TEN March 07, 2008 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. During CeBIT 2008 it was announced, that Acer buys E-TEN so these are good times for E-TEN because they have managed to sell themselves! E-TEN is making "glofiish" series of phones, all of them equipped with GPS and FM radio, and some of them equipped with VGA display combined with small (pocket) size and with or without 3G. By now if you wanted to get Windows Mobile phone with VGA display, 3G and built-in GPS in one package only E-TEN offers it (others offer 240x320 or 320x320 displays only when it comes to pocket-size phones with GPS and 3G), but it may change soon with release of HTC-made T-Mobile MDA Compact IV... so it is good to observe that E-TEN expands into area of digital mobile TV and radio! Since we have visited CeBIT as accredited press (The Fourth Estate), we were able to be in Hall 26 already one hour before official opening and the stand of E-TEN was empty still:
... but this guy who, despite coming from Europe, works for E-TEN in Taiwan:
... was already there and working! Obviously the biggest hit to come from E-TEN around August 2008 is E-TEN glofiish V900:
... that, as you can see above, offers also digital TV (including DVB-T known in UK as "FreeView" and including ultra-popular in UK digital radio "DAB") combined with 3.5G, VGA disply and GPS. Specifications of V900 are simply fantastic! Currently on sale is among others M800 that offers VGA display, 3.5G, and built-in GPS in pocket-size case with QWERTY keyboard:
M810 is similar to M800 but offers only QVGA display:
The "big" brother of tiny X600 is X650 that is a 2G phone but it offers WiFi and built-in GPS combined with VGA display (and it still is tiny!):
In other words: X650 is a low-budget tiny phone with VGA display and built-in GPS! Conclusion: E-TEN has an interesting line-up of Windows Mobile phones and if only V900 will go on sale promptly it may be a hit because no other phone offers DVB-T and DAB in one - yet. The only disadvantage of E-TEN phones is that they use proprietary connector to stereo headset instead of using standard 2.5 mm one, but this practice is common and also HTC is doing it... However now, that E-TEN has been acquired by Acer, we can expect only more and better phones from E-TEN and thanks to Acer the E-TEN phones will get much bigger distribution channels too. Still if you need VGA display combined with built-in GPS it looks like E-TEN nowadays has the best offering.
