Rumor: Microsoft to announce Windows Mobile 6.1 at CTIA 2008 next week March 26, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R. In recent years Microsoft was using Mobile World Congress (previously known as 3GSM) to announce new versions of Windows Mobile - because this one is the biggest the most important trade show in mobile phone industry but we reckon that extensions for finger-based navigation were not ready on time so instead they will be releasing it next week at CTIA, that takes place 1-3 April, what however is strange... .... because at Mobile World Congress 2008, where we were present on location, Microsoft employees were suggesting that instead of announcing Windows Mobile 6.1, Microsoft's manufacturing partners will be simply releasing new phones powered by this version. The main motivation for release of Windows Mobile 6.1 - a minor upgrade compared to whole revamping that Windows Mobile 7 will offer next year - is support for new management server software of Microsoft, but on top of that several other improvements will be included like better Internet Explorer, threaded texting/SMS and usability improvements. Early version of Windows Mobile 6.1 has leaked on the Internet in form of various more or less cooked ROM images for various phones, but it includes no improvements for finger-based navigation. Since CTIA trade show, that takes place next week is the only major wireless trade show before summer, clearly this might be just a speculation, but on the other hand Windows Mobile division has new top management and new top marketing guy, so clearly they need something to showcase quickly...
