First Windows Mobile 6.1 review published - finally threaded SMS but little much more! April 01, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R. Today at CTIA 2008 in Las Vegas everybody is expecting that MIcrosoft will announce Windows Mobile 6.1 for the public (although that Mobile World Congress 2008 in Febraury 2008 Microsoft employees told us that there will be no such announcement but just releases of phones with 6.1)... so if you can't wait few hours yet, then this review of Windows Mobile 6.1 can shorten your waiting: Windows Mobile 6.1 is certainly an incremental upgrade meant to stave off defection until Microsoft can release a completely overhauled Windows Mobile 7. In terms of feature functionality, the only real advantages the Apple iPhone had over Windows Mobile Professional were the zooming web browser and threaded text messaging. Both of those holes have been (mostly) filled by the 6.1 upgrade. Windows Mobile still needs a much faster web browser rendering engine, but at least they got the interface right. Commentary: we are disappointed that finger-based usability improvements for Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional apparently have not materialized and all we get is rather superficial upgrade. Now when finger-based navigation in touch-screen devices is absolutely vital, Microsoft continues to ignore it. It looks like we need to wait till February 2009 when Windows Mobile 7 will be announced...
