Vodafone will sell Windows Mobile powered phone with DVB-T - Gsmart T600 !
April 21, 2008 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.
Vodafone Germany apparently has just announced that it will be selling for 100 Euro with subscription (i.e. subsidized price) 2 phones with support for mobile TV of standard DVB-T (in UK known as "FreeView" - full terrestrial TV, not cut-down version like DVB-H): LG HB620T regular phone and GIGABYTE Gsmart T600 Windows Mobile PDA phone:
More details:
- EU government body - EU commission - has decided that DVB-H will be the standard for mobile TV but since major operators like Vodafone have not received a licence to operate DVB-H, they want to offer to end customers something else
- DVB-T is a standard terrestrial TV technology - a digital TV terrestrial (i.e. not satellite) broadcasting that has replaced analog TV in PAL/SECAM standard
- DVB-T is also operating outside of Europe, for example in Taiwan
- contrary to DVB-H, the reception of DVB-T is absolutely free and no monthly fee is necessary
- GIGABYTE is the first manufacturer that offers Windows Mobile phones with DVB-T but E-TEN is working now on V900 that will be released this summer that will also offer such support. HTC has not announced anything yet with DVB-T support.
- t600 has no 3G and no GPS but it offers WiFi, super-fast processor (520 MHz), genuine USB 2.0 support, VGA display, quad-band GSM and TV-output
- amazingly t600 supports also DAB radio (digital radio that is successor to FM radio) but in Germany (where this phone will be released) this service is totally seldom used and offering is tiny - contrary to UK where DAB radio is very crowded and also several private stations are broadcasting in this standard
