Elektrobit presents a reference design phone powered by Windows Mobile April 21, 2008 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. Finnish company Elektrobit presents a reference design (not a phone for end customers as some other sources falsely report!) that combines satellite phone with GSM/UMTS/HSPA(HSDPA+HSUPA) phone:
More info: EB and TerreStar are working to bring to market the world's first quad-band GSM and tri-band WCDMA/HSPA smartphone reference design with integrated satellite-terrestrial voice and data capabilities in a compact form factor. It will be a fully IP-based satellite handset reference design using high speed packet data. The smartphone reference design will have a touch screen and a full QWERTY keyboard. The reference device will allow users to connect seamlessly to both the satellite and terrestrial components of the TerreStar network. Similar in size to today's PDAs, the handset reference design will include advanced features, such as Microsoft Windows Mobile operating system and competitive service offerings, including SMS, MMS, Email, Push to Talk and Location Based Services (LBS). Conclusion: this reference design indeed is an interesting phone but it is just a potential design and some mobile operators must yet be interested in it because otherwise it will never materialize.
