GIGABYTE Gsmart t600 first impressions - DVB-T in mobile phones becomes reality April 22, 2008 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. Why should you pay for mobile TV a monthly subscription fee - over DVB-H or cellular networks - if you can have it for free and you can have full TV channels and not some cut-down versions? DVB-T is a standard of terrestrial digital TV that is operating among others in Europe (in UK it is called "FreeView") and some Asian countries and it has replaced analog TV (PAL/SECAM/NTSC). We have just received GIGABYTE Gsmart t600 and we will publish yet a full review of this phone, but here are the first impressions:
... so not only you can get all DVB-T channels and you don't have to pay any monthly subscription fee, but you receive exactly the same broadcasting as regular TV sets are receiving! The quality of TV on the display of t600 (640x480 pixels!) is amazing and with naked eye one can't see any pixelation at all:
Furtheremore OSD (on-screen display) is available too and you can see the channel name, volume of sound, strength of TV signal and battery status:
t600 doesn't have 3G (UMTS/HSDPA) and GPS, but it has very fast processor of 520 MHz, stunning VGA display, built-in utility to record phone calls, WiFi, Bluetooth, quad-band GSM and is powered by Windows Mobile 6. Already now we can tell that if you are spending some times outdoors (for example: commuting) and you would value ability to watch full digital TV in mobile phone, then t600 is for you! In reality DVB-H standard for mobile TV is just another scheme of mobile industry (for example: Nokia that puts DVB-H in their phones) to rip off end customers. DVB-T is free, no monthly fees are required and users get full TV and not some cut-down channels, so there is no need to use DVB-H at all! VGA display of this phone is amazing and reading PDF documents on this display is a pleasure (no horizontal scrolling required) and the phone can easily be carried in the pocket - it is small. Stay tuned for full review!
