Editorial: about importance of high-resolution display - say NO to QVGA ! April 23, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R. Previously Windows Mobile phones with resolution higher than QVGA (320x240) were oversized and overpriced. This summer we will see many Windows Mobile phones with high-resolution displays, including VGA (640x480) and Wide-VGA (800x480), so many users will be asking themselves a question: should I get new phone with high resolution or should I stick to QVGA? This time, after E-TEN (now part of Acer), Asus and GIGABYTE, also the biggest manufacturer of Windows Mobile phones - HTC - will be releasing pocket-size Windows Mobile phones with high resolution (see our upcoming coverage from HTC event on May 6, where we will be present on location!). In other words: thanks to HTC pocket-size Windows Mobile phones with high-resolution display will hit the mainstream. Should you stick to QVGA (or slightly improved 320x320) or should you go for high-resolution phone? We will answer here this question, but first let's take a look at size comparison of various resolutions:
Now please take a look how incredibly comfortable is reading of PDF documents in a Windows Mobile phone with VGA resolution:
Above screenshot comes from the free Adobe Reader 2.0 that is outdated by now, and if you don't want to wait for Windows Mobile 6.1 that will have PDF viewer built-in, you can download another fantastic free PDF viewer for Windows Mobile:
Remember: in case of Windows Mobile there are always alternatives for everything, including document viewing and web browsing. So if you are not satisfied with one program, just get yourself another one! Previously in order to even be able to read PDF files (or websites) special tricks would have to be used, including "reflow mode" and "one-column view" but nowadays the technological progress is so big, that these techniques make no longer any sense. Now users want to see content one-to-one as it is visible on their desktop computers. While it is always possible to use scaling and anti-aliased fonts to obtain better looks on low-resolution display the fact of the matter is that nothing can replace high-resolution display. Conclusion: don't even consider buying a phone of resolution lower than VGA! The only exception are mobile phones like Samsung i780, Treo 800w, etc. that offer front-facing keyboard for single-handed usage: in that case 320x320 resolutions sounds reasonable. In all other cases: say NO to any phone with resolution lower than 640x480 pixels! This summer many new Windows Mobile phones will go on sale and many people will want to get new phone, to get both new version of Windows Mobile (6.1 - with full Internet browsing and built-in Flash and Silverlight) and improved transfer speeds (HSDPA with 7.2 mbit/s and HSUPA with 1.4 mbit/s). For many years Windows Mobile was stuck with 320x240 resolution and now the time is ripe to forget about it and to move on...
