HTC to present new touch-screen technology on May 6 !
April 24, 2008 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

The motto of HTC's announcement on May 6 is "innovation" and we already know, that in software area HTC will present successor to HTC TouchFLO (formerly leaked to the Internet in early version under code-name "HTC Manila"). We also know that HTC will be introducing for the first time phones VGA display of small (pocket) size - all previous HTC phones with high-resolution were big. Another innovation will be accelerated HSDPA - up to 7.2 Mbit/second.

But what kind of hardware innovation we can expect in the area of touch-screen technologies? Interestingly new phones of HTC will be powered by 900mAh battery. Seems odd that other devices with similar features from HTC using QVGA screen have larger batteries and average battery life.

If the 900mAh battery size is true, why would they reduce the battery life of their new devices to below average? Doesn't make sense....unless perhaps HTC is using a new screen in the upcoming HTC devices that uses less battery. Could it be a capacitive touch screen like in iPhone which consumes less battery power? Possibily from Synaptics which also make a capacitive screen, that works with finger or stylus. Or maybe even an OLED to give HTC the same battery life if not better with a smaller battery? A less power consuming screen with the lower power Qualcomm chipset could give similar or better battery life with a 900mAh battery as current HTC devices while allow HTC to make much slimmer devices.

Note the HTC quote in this older article about Capacitive Touch Screens. Intrestingly all the other vendors quoted in this article have already released or have announced capacitive touch screen devices:

"With High Tech Computer Corp.'s new HTC Touch smart phone, users swipe a finger to scroll. A second swipe speeds up the scrolling.

"We've been doing touch screens for a long time, but this generation of touch screens is definitely breathing new life into the experience," said Todd Achilles, vice president of HTC America. "They're more accurate, more responsive, and you can get what you want to do on the first click."

It's all speculation yet, but it seems that something new in touch-screen technology from HTC is coming next month - and if it will not be multi-touch, then maybe new, improved, much more responsive, capacitive touch-screens!
