HTC beats Nokia: HTC releases as the first one a touch-screen phone with tilt sensor - HTC Touch Diamond !
May 06, 2008 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

Nokia plans to release a Symbian S60 touch phone with tilt sensor but there are some issues and this phone is being delayed, and it is HTC, not Nokia, that releases as the first such phone! ... and this phone will be available to all operators and also to all customers without operator branding.

The name of this phone is "HTC Diamond" (but it will be sold through operators under different names too) and the most important new feature of this phone is tilt sensor, meaning that you can play games like this (this game will be included in the phone but developers will be able to develop their own games that take advantage of tilt sensor):

... where you can move balls by tilting the phone in various directions! Apart from that you can do many other useful functions like rejecting incoming phone call, rotating Internet browser, etc. with use of this function - it is not just a gimmick useful in games. It is a new revolutionary feature first seen in a phone powered by Windows Mobile (note: previously we postulated to Microsoft to include tilt sensor API in Windows Mobile)!

Apart from revolutionary tilt sensor, HTC Touch Diamond brings something wholly new to HTC manufacturing: stylish design! And this design is meant not just in hardware but also in software. Work on HTC Touch Diamond started at HTC in November 2006 - exactly then when Horace Luke :

... has left Microsoft and joined HTC (in other words: when HTC poached him from Microsoft). Everything that we wrote about Horace Luke appeared to be spot-on!

But first things first, so let's take a look at a box in which HTC Touch Diamond will be sold (note: it looks like pyramid! ... or a diamond):

The HTC Touch Diamond phone is very small and generally makes very solid impression:

Other highlights about HTC Touch Diamond (not rumors anymore, hard facts learned by us in first-person contacts and touching):
  • main new feature of this phone not seen before: tilt sensor (it is a term that Horace Luke used himself in a presentation to 5 journalists in which we have participated) - it is not just an orientation sensor but full-blown tilt sensor
  • release date: in Europe and Asia in June 2008, later USA
  • powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 but at first it will be equipped with Opera Mobile 9.5 Internet browser because Microsoft is not ready yet with new Internet Explorer that offers rendering engine of full IE 6.0, built-in Flash and Silverlight support. Note: it is not clear when, if at all, this new Internet Explorer for Windows Mobile 6.1 will be delivered to customers buying HTC Touch Diamond - this is a hard fact
  • no memory card slot! this phone features 4 GB flash memory + 128 MB RAM + 256 MB ROM
  • this phone offers super-fast Internet - HSDPA with 7.2 MBit/second but (!) on the box (see photo above) it is written that upload speeds are up to 384kbps what means: this phone has no HSUPA (or there is mistake on the box in which this phone is sold!)
  • this phone doesn't offer quad-band-GSM and tri-band UMTS/HSDPA but instead of it offers tri-band GSM and dual-band UMTS/HSDPA, what means: there will be separate versions of HTC Touch Diamond for Europe/Asia and for USA
  • this phone is very solidly constructed: the case is made of metal and the display is covered with glass, that is done in technology thanks to which you can practically apply hammer to it and nothing happens - we have double-confirmed it with Horace Luke
  • USB connector serves many purposes: charging (compatible with mini-USB industry standard), data synchronization (compatible with mini-USB industry standard), stereo headset (HTC's proprietary HTC ExtUSB connector), logical disc (acts like memory stick so you don't have to install ActiveSync, etc. to exchange files)
  • dimensions: 102 mm (L) x 51 mm (W) x 11.5 m (T)
  • weight: 110 g
  • display: 2.8 inch TFT LCD with VGA resolution
  • pre-installed: HTC TouchFLO 3D, that however requires hardware acceleration and this phone indeed is doing 3D graphics in hardware thanks to special graphics chips!
  • main processor: Qualcomm MSM7201 528 MHz
  • GPS: built-in, based on Qualcomm chipset, both regular and assited GPS
These are just our first impressions and revelations about new way of HTC being represented by HTC Touch Diamond! Stay tuned for more: many videos and audio files, including some unique content not published elsewhere.

In meantime we would like to express big thanks to Eric Lin (HTC USA), Jason Gordon (HTC USA), Jessika Goldstein (Nelson Bostock USA), John Szymanski (Nelson Bostock UK) and Gemma Pears (Nelson Bostock UK) - for organisational support that made it possible to bring you this coverage!
