Geolocation API for Google Gears for Windows Mobile coming + Opera bundles Gears June 01, 2008 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. Not only Opera announces support for Google Gears in the browser but also Google is now planning to include support for geolocation in Google Gears meaning that web applications using Google Gears API will be able to know location of your Windows Mobile phone! The pace of innovation of Google is so incredibly high that sometimes it is difficult to catch up what various Google services and products are offering... but fortunately Google still continues to support Windows Mobile by releasing native applications for Windows Mobile, including Google Maps, Google Search and also Google Gears (after installation of Google Gears for Windows Mobile you can see it after selecting Menu / Tools / Google Gears Settings):
... and Google Gears essentially is an extension of a web browser that makes it possible not only to run off-line applications (combination of HTML and JavaScript) but also it allows web applications located on the Internet to access local resources of the phone (here: storage; in future: geolocation = geographical location):
In other words: thanks to Google Gears for Windows Mobile several Internet-located and locally placed web applications can run inside of Windows Mobile phones. On top of that soon also location, including GPS-based and triangulation based on cellular network placement (base station IDs) will also be available in Google Gears, also for Windows Mobile! Furthermore now also Opera includes support for Google Gears as you can see below! * * * * * Opera extends Gears support Opera Software announced today it will support Gears in its desktop and mobile browsers.
