HTC Touch Diamond arrived
June 19, 2008 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

Today morning we have received from HTC UK this phone (here visible during a 3G video call):

... which is, of course, the HTC Touch Diamond. It comes preloaded with latest ROM image, is fast, and HSDPA/3G is working very well in it! What next?

Next we will be reviewing various features of this phone. Our first impressions are:
  • this is the first mobile phone from HTC that offers high-resolution display (VGA = 640x480 pixels) in a small form factor
  • this phone is very small! much smaller than expected! people who like small phones will love this one.
  • even though this phone is small, the display seems to be big enough to be readable and with 2 times higher resolution than iPhone, one can clearly see all details (no pixelations like in iPhone)
  • there are no noticable problems with speed of HTC TouchFLO 3D extension - it is running fast and anyway one can switch it off, if one does not fancy it
  • 3G is working fine: both video calls (see above! these are video calls going over 3G network, not over Internet; not avalable in USA, only Europe and Asia) and web browsing with use of HSDPA (very fast! it is not UMTS, but fast HSDPA speeds!) are working fine and reliably
  • the tilt sensor can be a unique selling point, that can convince many people to get this phone (typical situation: look at this game! ... and then everybody wants to buy this phone just for this feature!) although HTC should release as fast as possible APIs for this sensor so that developers could start creating applications (sample idea: an application that is producing a sound "don't touch my phone!" whenever phone is tilted!)
Stay tuned for tests and reviews of various functionalities of this phone!

Unlike tests done by people in USA, our tests will be complete because we will test also 3G networks, including HSDPA up to 7.2 MB/s (available in Europe at several operators). Currently on sale is only a European/Asian version of HTC Touch Diamond (American coming later) because European operators have launched additional 3G bands, so it is impossible to have all American and European 3G bands in one phone (in fact no phone in the world has these all bands in one device) so no wonder, that those various reviews of this phone from USA cannot be complete...

There is no doubt about it: HTC Touch Diamond opens new chapter in the history of Windows Mobile.
