Puppet master buys his puppet : Nokia buys 100% of Symbian ! June 24, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R. Previously Nokia increased its ownership from circa 20% to 49%, when original creator of Symbian - Psion company - had left in protest against Nokia's refusal to float Symbian on the stock market... and now this East European corporation grabs it all - full 100%. As previously mentioned by us, Symbian was just a puppet of Nokia, that de facto controlled it and abused it for its own purposes. This takeover is just a formalization of the existing situation. Originally Symbian was established to prevent Microsoft from conquering mobile phone industry, but ... ... but Microsoft failed to appeal to mass market and thus to become a serious competitor to Symbian that still has over 70% of global market share of smartphone market. Microsoft was like that guy who tells to his mistress "I love you" but never ever thinks seriously about her and returns to his wife and children: Microsoft was saying that Windows Mobile is good also for mass market - for consumers - but never really meant it, focusing instead only on enterprise mobility. If only Zune marketplace music and video service could be also embedded in Windows Mobile, then everything could be different but Microsoft has failed miserably... So everything was fine in the Symbian-land because Windows Mobile limited to the enterprise market could not endanger its dominating position. But not any longer! Recently market leader in MP3 players - Apple, and market leader in the Internet - Google, entered the market and position of Symbian and thus position of Nokia has been endangered. Apple offers superior hardware (multi-touch display!) and Google offers superior integration with the Internet, so, even without Microsoft, destiny of Symbian was uncertain and Nokia has decided to act:
Microsoft now, in this situation, needs to release something really special to convince manufacturers and end users to buy their Windows Mobile! ... to pay money for something that others offer for free! ...and since Windows Mobile is not treated seriously within Microsoft (Ray Ozzy is too busy catching up with Google's Web 2.0 services) and other products like Microsoft Exchange and Windows Media have higher priority and are licensed to competitors to Windows Mobile, then there is not much what Microsoft can do, although we must say that full integration of Zune marketplace and Zune software into Windows Mobile could really help...
