Review: camera in HTC Touch Diamond June 28, 2008 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. Nowadays cheap digital cameras have 10 megapixel resolution for still images, 10 times optical zoom, and full HD for videos (1920x1080 pixels) combined with many intelligent features including smile detection, face detection, etc. so naturally it is difficult for mobile phones with built-in camera to compete, even with cheap digital cameras - that after all are specialized in image taking. Rather than publishing one big review of HTC Touch Diamond, we are publishing reviews that cover some particular aspect: previously we have published listening to audio in HTC Touch Diamond, quality of phone calls in HTC Touch Diamond, video calling with HTC Touch Diamond. This time we present screen shots of camera software, sample photos and description of the camera that is built-in into HTC Touch Diamond:
HTC Touch Diamond has on-screen graphics, and during picture taking the 3 icons at the bottom are gallery, picture taking mode and settings:
Note, that picture taking modes include also panorama and picture taking for contacts, apart from regular digital pictures and videos:
With a camera icon in settings one can select primary camera (3.2 megapixel, on the back) or secondary camera (640x480 pixels, front-facing):
... and one can also see advanced settings, that everybody should browse before taking pictures! * * * * * Now let's take a look at some sample pictures taken with HTC Touch Diamond. Click on each photo to get it zoomed to the original size!!! (sometimes you need to zoom-in further in your browser to get original size) Here is a sample of still image taken with HTC Touch Diamond (click on it to zoom!):
Here is another sample of still image taken with HTC Touch Diamond (click on it to zoom!):
Here you can see that even pictures taken in bad lighting conditions (quite dark) have a lot of detail in them (click on the photo to zoom it!):
HTC Touch Diamond has also panorama mode but then height of the photo is limited to 480 pixels only (click on the photos to zoom):
With HTC Touch Diamond one can even taken photos of documents and printed materials. Here is a sample photo made with HTC Touch Diamond where a book has been photographed in mediocre lighting conditions but still all details are visible and the text readable (click on it to zoom):
Finally, to get idea how a video recorded with HTC Touch Diamond looks like, download sample video recorded with HTC Touch Diamond (please unzip it first!) or visit the same video but uploaded to YouTube. Note: there is a trick to improve quality of pictures taken with HTC Touch Diamond, but since it decreases camera protection, we don't recommend to use it. It is worth underlining that HTC Touch Diamond has 2 cameras, and the second one is near the display and is designed for 3G video calling but it may be used also for photo taking although it has low resolution of only VGA (640x480 pixels) compared to 3.2 megapixel of the main camera. This secondary front-facing camera can be used also for making auto-portraits or just for shaving or putting lipstick or other operations on your face. Another interesting feature is that you can glide your finger over the button under the display (in the middle) and then the focus is being fixed. Conclusion: HTC Touch Diamond has a decent quality camera with auto-focus and higher resolution than average. Obviously the transparent material in the back cover of HTC Touch Diamond is made of plastic so pictures are not totally sharp, but HTC would have to use some complicated cover mechanism to avoid it and then the phone would be thicker too. All in all camera in HTC Touch Diamond is satisfactory for causal photography.
