Bill Gates leaves Microsoft for ever, but what has he contributed to Windows Mobile ?
June 29, 2008 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

2 days ago, on June 27, 2008, there was a last day of Bill Gates at Microsoft, who has founded Microsoft corporation and who recently was serving the role of chief architect and chairman and who still owns 9% of Microsoft. After leaving Microsoft, Bill Gates intends to get Nobel Peace Prize by giving away a lot of his money through charities.

A lot has been said about Bill Gates and his contributions to computer industry (de-facto standardization of software for personal computers, spawning Web 2.0 by making AJAX possible in IE, etc.) but what was contribution of Bill Gates to mobile phone industry in general and to Windows Mobile in particular?

The answer, sadly is: second to none. Bill Gates newever was particularly interested in mobile phones, never showed any passion in this direction. Most of his efforts in mobile phone industry area were devoted to selling some server-side infrastructure software to mobile operators, but not on convincing consumers to buy Windows Mobile.

And what now? The times for Windows Mobile are difficult and it looks like year 2008 will be the last "easy year" because in 2009 massive attack of Google Android powered phones combined with iPhone and FREE Symbian OS, will be further undremining position of Windows Mobile in the smartphone market. That Windows mobile 7 that is coming out early next year must support out-of-the-box multi-touch and tilt-sensor or Windows Mobile will continue to be a failure...
