Windows Mobile ecosystem discussed by Microsoft, hard issues not mentioned
July 23, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R.

Many Windows Mobile software developers are leaving Windows Mobile for iPhone because in one month with iPhone software they can earn more money than in several years with Windows Mobile software but once again a Microsoft employee with safe corporate job at Microsoft, totally disconnected from reality, is preaching about Windows Mobile ecosystem, but is not mentioning hard issues at all:

ISVs are free to build anything they can dream up using the platform SDKs to run on those devices. The success of any platform depends on everyone working together from a pool of opportunity and the expertise they bring to it. Mobility is a big, big pool right now. The touchy part of any ecosystem comes into play when you start getting into "ownership". Who owns what.

To learn more visit related article by Microsoft employee about Windows Mobile ecosystem.

The hard issues not discussed by Microsoft anywhere, not answered anywhere are:
  • why developers should create software for Windows Mobile if they have to pay 50-60% of fee to intermediary companies like Handango while Apple takes only 30% ?
  • why still it is not possible to purchase Windows Mobile software from within Windows Mobile - like it is with iPhone ?
Conclusion: for Microsoft employees it is easy because they have good jobs for life (most of them will never be fired - they just move to different departments of Microsoft if they fail) but Windows Mobile software developers are asking themselves a question: why should I still develop software for Windows Mobile if iPhone can bring me much more money? Microsoft should stop pretending that there is no elephant in the room. This elephant is here and it is making a lot of noise... and is totally destroying Windows Mobile ecosystem.
