The best podcast catcher for Windows Mobile - review September 30, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R. Apple has refused to accept to App Store 2 applications for iPhone, which could download podcasts directly to iPhone over WiFi without PC or Mac. Furthermore iPhone cannot do it with built-in software. Fortunately, unlike iPhone, all Windows Mobile phones can use any software and there are several podcast catchers for Windows Mobile. Here we review the best podcast catching program for iPhone and it is jaw-droppingly good! Read on! The podcast podcast catcher (aka "podcatcher") for Windows Mobile is Beyond Pod from http://www.beyondpod.mobi and amazingly it is free and fully open source! This program can do everything, including scheduling of podcast downloading and playback with embedded player. You don't need any other program for podcast downloading and listening. In the feeds view this program looks like this (note: it can also read RSS feeds - so it can be used not only for podcast downloading):
Podcasts can be downloaded:
... and listened to right away without the need to use other players (although it is also possible):
Amazingly you can even use a scheduler to update podcasts (you can define how many latest episodes) in some time in future:
... and the included scheduler lets you not only to launch podcast updating process (i.e. checking if new episodes are available), but also other operations can be scheduled (here: note the WiFi-on event!):
The only problem is that sometimes this program shows this message:
... but is not crashing anyway. Note also that we are also offering a podcast:
... where usually 5 people (3 from USA + 2 from EU) talk about Windows Mobile phones each week (new episodes are published usually on Saturday or Sunday). To subscribe just add this address: http://x.msmobiles.com/portal/podcast.xml ... to list of your subscriptions in Beyond Pod! Thanks to Beyond Pod you can even schedule updating each night when you are asleep and get latest episodes in the morning... Conclusion: maybe it is good that Microsoft is not doing podcast downloading as feature of Windows Mobile! In this way 3rd party developers are able to develop more sophisticated solutions for podcast downloading. Podcasts are MP3 files available through also through RSS feeds to enable automatic downloading of new episodes with programs like Beyond Pod and due to focus on given area (known also as "narrowcasting") they deliver a lot of information to listeners that cannot be found anywhere else. In other words: if you own a Windows Mobile phone, then we recommend that you download Beyond Pod now (from here) and start listening to podcasts!
