Robbie Bach is boss of both Xbox and Windows Mobile divisions of Microsoft, so he his above Andy Lees - boss of Windows Mobile. Obviously diversity is good for everybody: “Does AT&T like having iPhone on its network? Sure. But they want to have balance in that ecosystem, where there’s three or four big partners. That’s why we’re so attactive to them—because we work with Samsung, Sony-Ericsson, LG, HTC, Motorola. Don’t get me wrong, the iPhone is a cool device. But it’s not about choice.” Note in above quote that Microsoft still lives in old reality, where operating platform provider must cater for mobile operators first, while Apple lives in new reality where end customers come first and where developers come second, operators/carriers only come 3rd. In the era, where millions of users and thousands of developers are turning away from Windows Mobile towards iPhone, talking about ecosystem understood as "satisfying needs of mobile operators" means that Microsoft does not get it still. Microsoft needs to introduce support for multi-touch in Windows Mobile to satisfy end customers and Microsoft needs to launch global Windows Mobile application store to satisfy developers. Catering for needs of mobile operators leads nowhere as these companies very often go against the best interest of end users.
