Enterprise Mobility: Motorola adds Windows Mobile 6.1 to their rugged devices October 30, 2008 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. Motorola is making 2 kinds of devices powered by Windows Mobile: for consumer market (smartphones from Motorola Q series) and enterprise market (rugged devices). Interestingly apart from Windows Mobile update Motorola is announcing also availability of "multiple OS option" for some of their rugged devices so users can run both Windows Mobile and Windows CE - maybe it is a sign that Motorola could deliver also this "multiple OS" option for consumer devices and offer dual-OS with both Windows Mobile and Google Android? More information from Motorola follows. * * * * * Motorola Expands Windows Mobile Support for Mobile Computing Customers Windows Mobile 6.1 support across mobile computing portfolio includes MC3000 family The Enterprise Mobility business from Motorola, Inc. announced the availability of the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system on its rugged mobile computers and enterprise digital assistants to better manage and deploy devices throughout the enterprise. Initial products to support the new platform will include Motorola’s flagship MC9000 rugged mobile computers, the ergonomic MC3000 mobile computers and the size-optimized MC70 and MC75 Enterprise Digital Assistants (EDAs). “Motorola continues to expand on its history of innovation with a breadth of mobile computing solutions designed to meet the enterprise needs of mobile workers both inside and outside the four walls,” said Brian Viscount, vice president of mobile computing, Motorola’s Enterprise Mobility business. “By supporting the latest Windows Mobile offerings, Motorola helps to provide a significant advantage for application developers while continuing to help enterprise mobility customers increase productivity and improve mobile business performance.” Windows Mobile 6.1 helps to provide advantages to Motorola mobile computer customers deploying business-essential applications. Support for Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008, which provides a single point of access for line-of-business applications and corporate data, also provides security-enhanced features such as on-device encryption to help protect sensitive information. IT managers will also find increased device control to wirelessly administer and deploy software upgrades, available through System Center Mobile Device Manager or Motorola’s device management solutions. Windows Mobile 6.1 combined with Motorola mobile computers, and partner-based solutions, allow users and businesses to operate more efficiently in real-time – inside the retail store, on the loading dock or on a delivery route. "With mission-critical applications for Windows Mobile devices, mobile workers are equipped with the tools needed to be as productive out of the office as they are in the office," said Stephanie Ferguson, general manager, Mobile Communications Business, Microsoft Corp. “We’re proud of our continued work with Motorola to deliver the latest in mobile solutions and empower our shared customers.” Multiple Microsoft OS options for MC3000 Demonstrating Motorola’s continued ability to meet customer demands with versatile product offerings, the MC3000 mobile computer will now support Windows Mobile 6.1 for the first time. With the option of Windows Mobile 6.1 or Windows CE 5.0, Motorola’s MC3000 mobile computers provide application developers and customers with the flexibility to choose the operating system that best serves their mobile workforce needs. The MC3000 mobile computer is ergonomically designed for scan-intensive environments that require high-quality data capture. Select MC3090 Windows Mobile 6.1 configurations also feature the popular rotating scan head with left, right and front positions to allow the user to adjust the scanning position for increased comfort and productivity. Along with four-foot drop specifications across of the entire operating temperature range, the MC3090 series of rugged mobile computers has an IP54-rated sealing for protection against water and dust and provides reliable performance in tough environmental conditions. Support for Windows Mobile 6.1 is expected to be available on the MC3000, MC9000 and MC70 mobile computers in the fourth quarter of 2008, as well as on the MC75 in the first quarter of 2009.
