Latest data about position of Windows Mobile in smartphone market
November 07, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R.

Once upon a time Windows Mobile had strong 2nd position in smartphone market, right after Symbian. What is it today? What is going on in smartphone market in general nowadays? Read on!

Canalys reports that in latest quarter (Q3, 2008) the positions in smarpthone market are:
  1. Nokia-owned Symbian (still number one but Apple, RIM BlackBerry and also Windows Mobile are taking away market share from it)
  2. Apple iPhone
  3. RIM BlackBerry
  4. Microsoft Windows Mobile
... so in other words: Microsoft has lowly 4th position. It is worth noticing, that the first Google Android phone went on sale just last month, but many manufacturers have big plans for it, including such that consider this OS to be placed in all phones, not just smartphones... so clearly it may well be that in 2009 Windows Mobile will drop to position number 5.

It is worth mentioning also that Apple iPhone, RIM BlackBerry and Google Android - all of them - have central application store, that is not available at Windows Mobile, but that is extremely effective in popularizing of these platforms because users don't have to search applications all over the Internet, but can get them directly to the device - all in one place. In other words: Microsoft is not only backward with regard to competition in area of user interface, like finger navigation (not available yet, only stylus) and multi-touch (not available at all), but also Microsoft is far far behind competition in area of central application store, that is revolutionizing mobile software industry right now.

Note: thanks to promptly release of HTC Touch Diamond (and other related) and due to big delay of Nokia releasing their new touch-screen phone, HTC managed to sell a lot of phones powered by Windows Mobile, but still it is less than Symbian, RIM and Apple.
