Steve Ballmer hints at Windows Mobile app store, talks about iPhone app store
November 10, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R.

Updated: video included!

We were very surprised, when we have heard Steve Ballmer saying that not much money is being made at iPhone app store, despite many reports that companies and indviduals are earnings tens over tens of thousands of dollars each month from iPhone applications sold through iPhone store. We ourselves have reports from Windows Mobile developers abandoning Windows Mobile and switching to iPhone because they can earn in one month more money on iPhone than whole year with Windows Mobile.

How much detached from reality Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, must be to say such thing? Anyway it is good, that he hints that Windows Mobile app store is coming too, as you can hear in this video snippet (Flash player required to play it):

Ballmer also hinted that Windows Mobile 7 will be very impressive in other part of the presentation, that you can see in full here.

Commentary: with all due respect, is Steve Ballmer living in a bubble that he keeps saying things that obviously are not true? The fact of the matter is that already now 3 platforms competitive to Windows Mobile - iPhone, Blackberry and Google Android - have central app stores, what means that all users don't have to browse all over Internet to find application but have them in one place, what creates economy of scale and big earning opportunity for developers. Particularly iPhone app store was very succesful and there are many reports that, contrary to what Steve Ballmer says, many developers are making a lot of money (see for example here: example of developer earning a lot of money and information about Apple earning a lot of money and about VC-financing companies focused on Apple app store). Microsoft should face realities and accelerate release of Windows Mobile with multi-touch and app store, instead of just talking about stuff but in meantime competition is going with full power ahead and Windows Mobile is losing markte share big-time!
