Microsoft deals severe blow to Windows Mobile: Microsoft Office for iPhone coming ! November 16, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R. What is wrong with Microsoft? Why is it supporting direct competitors instead of favoring its own product - Windows Mobile? Q: Will the Office Web Applications work on the iPhone? A: Yes, in the Safari web browser. To learn more, visit FAQ session about Microsoft Office Web Applications (at Microsoft's on10.net page) and related release (at Microsoft's press zone). Commentary: it is not exactly Microsoft Office for iPhone but rather a web application offering office functionalities, but one must pay attention whether this web office will be rolled out at the same time for Windows Mobile or not. Probably: servers of Microsoft will be recognizing iPhone and reacting/rendering appropriately. However in case of Silverlight (Microsoft's Flash) it was available long time for Mac OS X, but is still not available for Windows Mobile... so it may well be that web based Office (probably suitable for team collaboration on documents, not just editing stand-alone documents) will be available for iPhone but not for Windows Mobile! Conclusion: clearly Windows Mobile is one of the least important divisions of Microsoft if all Microsoft products left and right are available for other platforms, but not for Microsoft's own Windows Mobile! Note: as presented in our review of Internet Explorer Mobile 6 the Google Docs are not usable in it for editing, but the same is in the case of iPhone - it also cannot edit Google Docs in Safari. However if Microsoft would make Office Web Applications usable in iPhone but not in Windows Mobile, it would be serious blow to Windows Mobile.
