iPhone versus Windows Mobile catfight : Flash in Internet browser
December 01, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R.

In a series of video reviews we will present comparison of latest iPhone (ROM version 2.2) with latest Windows Mobile (6.1) in various specific areas. Of course one could describe such comparison textually but seeing video changes everything - it shows features, that are being compared in action.

In the first video we present Internet browser comparison in the area of Flash support (Flash required to view this video):

Commentary

As you can see above iPhone's Safari browser does not support Flash at all and as of now Apple totally does not allow any browser plugins. In other words: hulu.com, jibjab, original version of YouTube and several other websites that use Flash cannot be used with iPhone at all.

On the other hand situation with Windows Mobile in area of Flash looks like this:
  • Skyfire browser for Windows Mobile supports full Flash 9 right now - i.e. all Flash websites can be viewed (in video above you can see hulu.com watchable with this browser)
  • Flash Lite is available for Opera Mobile right now - it is not compatible with Flash 9 or 10 but several websits are working, including full version of YouTube
  • next version of Windows Mobile - Windows Mobile 6.1.4 will have Internet Explorer Mobile 6 with support for Flash Lite (see also: our video review of Internet Explorer Mobile 6)
  • Adobe has promised Flash 10 for Windows Mobile so next year the very full version of Flash is coming to Windows Mobile
Note also: in iPhone it is forbidden by Apple to run other browsers than Apple's Safari. Also plugins in Safari are forbidden. In Windows Mobile however the Microsoft Internet Explorer Mobile can use plugins - for example that is the reason why Google Gears plugin works fine in Windows Mobile. Other browsers for Windows Mobile also support plugins. In other words: by definition the openness of Windows Mobile guarantees that Flash support in Windows Mobile is good and will be even better in near future.

Verdict

Clearly Windows Mobile is the winner here. Interestingly, in UK certain advertisments of iPhone were forbidden just because they claimed that iPhone provides "full Internet browsing" despite the fact that it does not support any form of Flash. While some may argue, that having Flash is not so essential, we must underline that in many cases it is simply impossible to access several websites, or their main functionality, without Flash!
